What is the difference between ISO 15118 and DIN 70121 ?

ISO 15118 and ISO 15118-20 are both standards that define a communication protocol for electric vehicles (EVs) to charge. However, there are significant differences between the two versions.

ISO 15118 is the original standard that defines the communication interface requirements for EVs. It focuses on the physical layer and data link layer requirements for implementing the ISO 15118 standard. This part of the standard specifies the technical details related to the communication protocols, connectors, and physical interfaces needed to establish a reliable and efficient communication link between an EV and a charging station.

ISO 15118-20 is an extension of the original ISO 15118 standard. It introduces additional functionalities and improvements to enhance the overall charging experience for EVs. This new version supports advanced features such as Plug & Charge, where authentication and authorization processes are automated, making charging even more convenient for EV owners. It also enables secure communication over wireless networks, allowing EVs to connect to charging infrastructure without the need for physical cables.

ISO 15118-20 and ISO 15118 differ in their scope and focus. While ISO 15118-20 focuses on defining the communication interface requirements for EVs, ISO 15118-2 focuses on the physical layer and data link layer requirements necessary for implementing the ISO 15118-2 standard.

In summary, ISO 15118 is the original standard that defines the communication interface requirements for EVs, while ISO 15118-20 is an extension that introduces additional functionalities and improvements to enhance the overall charging experience for EVs. Both standards work together to ensure seamless and standardized communication between EVs and charging infrastructure, and they are designed to complement each other.
