Is IP67 waterproof OK for swimming?

When it comes to choosing the right waterproof rating for your smart devices, one common question that people often ask is whether IP67 waterproof is suitable for swimming. In this article, we will explore what IP67 means and discuss its suitability for swimming.

Understanding IP67 Waterproof Rating

IP67 stands for "Ingress Protection" and consists of two digits. The first digit represents the device's protection against solid particles, while the second digit indicates its resistance to water. In the case of IP67, the 6 signifies that the device is entirely dust-tight, providing complete protection against any solid particle. Meanwhile, the 7 means that the device can withstand immersion in up to 1 meter (about 3.3 feet) of water for about 30 minutes without any harmful effects.

The Limitations of IP67 Waterproof Rating

Although IP67 may sound impressive, it's important to note its limitations, particularly regarding swimming. While the rating suggests that the device can survive accidental submersion, it doesn't guarantee its functionality or safety beyond the specified depth and time limit. Furthermore, IP67 is primarily designed to protect against temporary immersion rather than prolonged exposure to water, such as continuous swimming. Therefore, it's crucial to understand that using an IP67-rated device for swimming might pose risks.

Considerations for Swimming with IP67 Waterproof Devices

If you decide to use a device with an IP67 waterproof rating while swimming, here are some important considerations:

Depth and Duration: Stick to the recommended depth and duration stated in the IP67 rating to minimize potential damage to the device.

Rinsing After Use: Rinse the device with fresh water after swimming to remove any chlorine or salt that may corrode the device over time.

Avoid High Water Pressure: Avoid using IP67-rated devices under high water pressure, such as in a strong jet or waterfall, as it might exceed the specified limits of protection.

Regular Maintenance: Regularly check for any signs of wear or damage to ensure the continued reliability of the waterproof seal.

While IP67 waterproof rating can provide some level of protection against water, it's always advisable to consider using dedicated waterproof devices specifically designed for swimming or water-related activities. These devices often come with higher waterproof ratings and additional features tailored for aquatic environments, ensuring a safer and more reliable experience.
