Is ISO 15118:20 Bidirectional?

ISO 15118 is a technical standard that defines communication between electric vehicles (EVs) and charging infrastructure. It facilitates the exchange of data like charging session management, power transfer control, and EV status. The latest version, ISO 15118:20, introduces bidirectional communication capabilities.

Understanding ISO 15118

ISO 15118 aims to create a standardized method for communication between EVs and charging stations. With the introduction of plug-and-charge technology, it enables automatic authentication and authorization of EVs without the need for additional RFID cards or smartphone apps. This simplifies and streamlines the charging process for EV owners.

The Benefits of Bidirectional Communication

Traditional charging systems only allow one-way communication, with the charger supplying power to the EV. However, ISO 15118:20 introduces bidirectional communication, enabling the EV to transmit information back to the charging station. This opens up new possibilities, such as Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) integration, where EVs can provide energy back to the grid during peak demand periods or in emergency situations. Bidirectional communication also allows for more efficient load balancing and advanced smart grid functionalities.

Implementing ISO 15118:20

To implement ISO 15118:20, both the EV and the charging infrastructure must support the standard. The EV needs to have the necessary hardware and software to enable bidirectional communication. Similarly, the charging station must be equipped with compatible communication modules. The implementation of ISO 15118:20 requires collaboration between automakers, charging station manufacturers, and utilities to ensure widespread adoption and interoperability.
