What is the IEC 61000-4-5 Test Level?

The IEC 61000-4-5 test level, also known as Surge Immunity Test, is an international standard used to evaluate the resistance of electronic devices against surges and transients caused by electrical disturbances like lightning strikes or power switching events. It provides a way to measure and compare the ability of equipment to withstand such electrical disruptions without suffering any damage.

Why is it Important?

In today's interconnected world, electronic devices are constantly at risk of being exposed to power fluctuations and electrical surges. These surges can cause severe damage to sensitive electronic components, leading to system failures and costly repairs or replacements. By testing devices according to the IEC 61000-4-5 standard, manufacturers can ensure their products can withstand these disturbances, improving their overall reliability and durability.

The Test Levels

The IEC 61000-4-5 standard defines different test levels based on the expected severity of surge events that may be encountered in various environments. There are several test levels ranging from 1 kV to 8 kV for both common and differential mode surges. The test levels may vary depending on the type of equipment being tested and the intended usage environment.

The Test Procedure

The surge immunity test is typically conducted using specialized equipment capable of generating high voltage surges with specific waveforms. During the test, the surge is applied to various connections of the equipment, including power supply lines, data lines, and signal lines. The equipment under test is monitored during the test to ensure it continues to operate correctly and does not exhibit any malfunctions or damage as a result of the surge. The test procedure follows strict guidelines outlined by the IEC 61000-4-5 standard to ensure accurate and repeatable results.
